Overview

Geographical/topographical features: A wetland and ponds located on a plateau more than 750 m above sea level [Shinsen Marsh district]
Historical/cultural features: Niseko (Nisekoan) means “(a river flowing below) a sheer cliff” in the Ainu language.
Said to boast the most beautiful pond in the Niseko mountain range, legend has it that Shinsen Marsh was given its name because it has the mystical appearance of a place inhabited by gods (shin) and mountain hermits (sen).
Climate, flora and fauna: It has a cold climate, and flowers such as ezozenteika, daylily (Hemerocallis esculenta) and hiogiayame, Arctic iris (Iris setosa) bloom here in summer.

There is a walking trail with boardwalks, which even people without any mountain-climbing experience can walk on, goes around within the district, enabling visitors to enjoy trekking along the ponds. However, please note that this district is accessible only in summer, because winter brings heavy snowfalls and the roads including Pref. Route 66 are closed to traffic.
[Niseko district]
This district boasts two of the four international ski resorts that together comprise the highly acclaimed ‘Niseko United,’ which has been dubbed the “St. Moritz of the Orient.” In winter, it is packed with skiers.

・25 km / 40 minutes by car from JR Kozawa Station, 28 km / 50 minutes by car from Kutchan Station (* The prefectural road between Iwanai and Lake Toya (commonly known as Niseko Panorama Line) is closed to traffic in winter)
・Take the bus (Goshiki Onsen) from JR Niseko Station and get off at Shinsen-numa (Shinsennuma Marsh) (operates only in high season (weekends and national holidays between early August and early October))
