- Overview
-
- Geographical/topographical features
- When you alight from the ropeway, a semicircular gorge surrounded by steep cliffs meets your eyes. This geological feature is a cirque , which was formed by the erosion of the mountain's surface by the stately progression of a glacier about 20,000 years ago. The vast size of this cirque led to its being named “Senjojiki,” which means “the width of a thousand tatami mats.”
- Historical/cultural features
- The cirque has a very pronounced shape, with terminal moraines at its bottom. As such, it is of tremendous scientific value to the nation and has been designated a natural monument by Nagano Prefecture.
- Climate, flora and fauna
- Located in a subalpine to alpine zone, this area experiences cold conditions, reaching a maximum of 20°C or so in summer. At its best between late July and mid-August, Senjojiki's flower garden of alpine plants includes shinanokinbai (Trollius japonicus); hakusan-ichige, narcissus anemone (Anemone narcissiflora); kuroyuri, Kamchatka fritillary (Fritillaria camschatcensis); and miyamakinpoge, meadow buttercup (Ranunculus acris var. nipponicus). As well as haimatsu, Siberian dwarf pine (Pinus pumila), plants growing wild along the ridge of the Central Alps include kibanashakunage (Rhododendron aureum) and urashimatsutsuji (Arctous alpina var. japonica). The forest is home to 520 plant species (approximately 270 of which are alpine plants).
- Attractions
- The Senjojiki Cirque unfolds before your eyes as you alight from the ropeway. Visitors can savor views of alpine plants and autumn leaves while taking a stroll on a footpath that makes a 40–50-minute circuit through the cirque. April and May bring the opportunity to enjoy spring skiing. This is a hiking trail that offers uniquely exquisite and extraordinary views, thanks to the contrast between the delicate alpine plants, the rugged rock face, and the clear blue sky. A mountain trail splits off from the footpath and heads up along the ridge of the Central Alps, enabling visitors to enjoy real mountain climbing on Mount Hoken, Mount Naka, and Mount Kisokoma.
- Other
- The Komagatake Ropeway is a mountain ropeway running to Senjojiki Cirque, directly below Mount Hoken (2,931 m) in the Central Alps. It is famous for having the biggest elevation difference of any ropeway in Japan (950 m) and Japan's highest station (Senjojiki Station: 2,612 m).
